Dataviz League Gathers Adventurers!
Also Lego art project, Material Data Art projects from beads and threads, more Van Gogh, project about Mothers and Scars!
Several Words About Data Art Practice!
I want to continue VizDice events - and practice regularly! And I came up with such a thing that all participants get points for projects - and I make a table with the results of the adventurers' datavision league! Just like in a normal game!
Here's what a VizDice session looks like:
A bit of data viz theory
Creating characters
Rolling the dice to determine the sequence of turns and the task!
Completing the task by the end of the workshop!
Admiring the results!
The task consists of several random elements:
Dataset
Visualization style
How to visualize each variable!
Between workshops, I'll be awarding 5 points for simply solved data viz tasks and 10 points for particularly impressive solutions. This way, regular participants can engage in some serious competition! 😍
If you enjoy this kind of activity, I’d like to "level up" the characters by giving them tasks of different types and complexities—maybe even on various topics like tools, data, design... But that's for the future!
Check the details from the last workshop here or in the end of the letter!

Point of View
One of the members of our community is a big fan of movies, so inspired by the theme of eyes and projects by other F&N community members, they created this project. The "Point of View" project combines data visualization and cinema. Inspired by Movie Barcode charts, the author automated the process of analyzing color changes in films using Python.
Input: .mp4 file and movie title.
Output: Pantone color list, Movie Barcode with time markers, detailed and circular diagrams.
The first analyzed film is "Happiness" ("Бақыт") from Kazakhstan, 2022, which explores the theme of domestic violence.
New Project - Moms and Scars
Survey for the "Moms and Scars" Project
Inspired by
’s wonderful project, “Awards for Mothers” (image from there), I decided to create a data art project dedicated to women who are trying to become mothers or who have become mothers—to share their experiences and struggles.I want to conduct a survey to gather as much data as possible from a diverse group of mothers.
Motherhood stories vary widely, and I’ve tried to cover all known scenarios in the anonymous survey. If you are a mother or know any mothers, please share this survey with them. Some questions are sad, and I apologize for that in advance. 💔
The survey takes less than 5 minutes. I would appreciate your responses and any shares to relevant channels and groups ❤️
World Data Art News
The Lasting Petals of Palestine
A difficult and very sad project dedicated to the victims in Palestine - by David Fiz and his team. It references Valentina D'Efilippo's poppy project and the Palestinian poppy project by Gulrez Khan.
The interactive project is here.
Dots
A bright project from Zach Bowders. It is dedicated to LEGO and made with Alteryx and Tableau. Check it here.
And it reminds me of an old Peter Gill project about music!
Van Gogh Letters
I love projects dedicated to Van Gogh for their beautiful color palette. Here's another wonderful project by the incredible Annabelle Rincon!
This project artfully visualizes the letters Vincent van Gogh exchanged throughout his life. The viz explores the top three themes—family, time, and painting—and highlights the word count devoted to these topics.
Interactive version here, made in Tableau.
An old dataviz 🍀
In 1792, Paul Dietrich Gieseke depicted plant families according to their relationship established by Carl Linnaeus.
Although the size of the circle depends on the number of species in the family, the whole system is based on their similarity, which is accompanied by ...clarification of textual information on the border between the circles.
Such exotic techniques! It's a pity that it's not so easy to review the texts, but what a job! I love such ink projects, even if the visualizations are simple, there is some beautiful grace hidden in them.

Trickle Down! New DataYarn Project!
Fresh off the press, here's a new climate-themed handmade project made by Daniele! 😍 It's a project about global warming and the injustice surrounding it! The metaphor is represented by an hourglass (for boiling eggs, as the author notes).
Check the details here!
Thanks to Sophie Sparkes for the tip!
My projects
The Climate Bracelet
I’ve made the website for my material climatic project! I’ve told there the story of it’s creation, I hope, you like it!
For those who haven't seen it before - this beaded bracelet encodes data on global warming over the past decades in the Arkhangelsk region - where I'm from. I wanted to create such a project, inspired by the Warming Stripes trend - but it ended up being something quite unusual.
And incredibly complicated! I had to convert colors three times between different conversion tables! And I recalculated everything countless times... 🤣
The details you can find on my website!
Second VizDice Session - done!
The core of VizDice exercises is focused on working with visual attributes. These are different methods of encoding data that help our brains quickly process visual information. All data visualization is built on these principles.
Examples of visual attributes include:
Color
Size
Length
Thickness
Position in space (x, y, z)
Shape
Angle, etc.
There are just over a dozen known visual attributes, and different types of charts are created using them. In data art, several different types of visual attributes are often used in a single project, making data art look complex, rich, and unique.
By the way, this time I actually managed to create a pretty decent project—featuring fish on the theme of traffic accidents. Last time, I ended up with some rather phallic flowers, which I didn’t even bother showing you!
You can check out most of the exercise results on the project’s website: https://eolay.tilda.ws/diceworkshop/en
If anyone is interested in participating, the next workshop will be in September, but prices will be higher by then.
So, if you want to join at the "friendship price," sign up on the pre-registration list: https://forms.gle/wrK6ZeWqqh5nmVSn8.
That’s it for today! Thank you for reading! 🌸
