Data Art Adventures with Dragons and Dices!
Also Discover Vibrant Palettes, Badges, and Workshop, Inspired by D&D
I really love the game Dungeons & Dragons! I have a lot of comics and funny sketches dedicated to it, there's a data art project on this topic, and now there's even a data visualization event! It's so much fun to combine your hobbies with each other. I highly recommend it to everyone! Data art, in particular, lends itself to such cross-disciplinary approaches. Combine everything with everything and boldly share your interests with the world!
Palettes for the techie!
I always worry that I'm not a designer and don't understand colors and fonts, but now I just use ready-made palettes and rely on the power of the community! So far, this has helped me a lot! I'm sharing with you some interesting old and new tools for finding beautiful color combinations!
These tools include extracting shades from a picture, matching combinations to a given color, and simply creating well-balanced palettes! Arm yourselves and go forth!

Material Data Art Workshop Results
Finally, I have gathered all the photos and projects from our June workshop, Flowers and Numbers, where we experimented with Material Data Art together with Nadya Andrianova!
I have put together a webpage where everything is collected! So I'm sharing some fragments here, and you can see the rest by following the link - Data Art Workshop!

Data Postcards
The postcard story continues! Let me remind you that this is the Data Postcards project, where I send postcards with our community's logos and a little data art on the back to community members and supporters. Inspired by Dear Data, so to speak!
![](https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F01784bcb-4edc-47e3-bdff-5a2ff4344855_1057x734.png)
The postcards have already been sent to Norway, Bulgaria, the United Kingdom, Serbia, Afghanistan, and many cities in Russia! They take a while to arrive, but I record the dates of sending and receiving so I can create an art project with this data later!
If you also want a postcard, here are the details: Data Postcards!
International Relations
Actually, I'm incredibly happy that our community is attracting more and more international participants! I'm quickly translating the pages of the website into English so that newcomers from all over the world can navigate more easily.
It's also wonderful that Telegram, the software we use to communicate, has a built-in chat translation feature! And on YouTube, there are ways to translate audio one way or another! It's amazing; I wish there were as few barriers to art as possible!
Huge thanks to the wonderful Sophie Sparkes, who is exploring ways to facilitate easy translation of materials and helping participants from different countries! I’m sure you know her beautiful Data Portraits!

A 2nd Video About Community Data Portraits!
Recently, we gathered again on the air to talk about the process of creating various data icons! This time, the tools were quite diverse - involving programming, vector drawing, and both interactive and static designs.
Tools used: Figma, R, Procreate, p5.js, Illustrator
Recommendation from Evgeny for the broadcast: книга Semiology of Graphics от Jacques Bertin
Check the video on YouTube! Read more about Community Data Badges here.

World Data Art News
Death from Natural Disasters
It is a beautiful and elegant project by Faith Rotich. I generally love natural motifs in data art, and such graceful ones even more so ❤️

Eurovision in Data Art!
Denis Shumilin uses Charticulator, Deneb, and SVG to create an incredibly beautiful dashboard in Power BI on the theme of Eurovision.
Of course, Power BI isn’t exactly a data art tool, but what can stop a person on their way to creating art?
You can view the interactive dashboard here!

This project reminded me of a similar Eurovision-themed project created using the no-code tool NodeBox! Julia Pincas' project, inspired by the works of Federica Fragapane, turns the statistics of the performance of participating countries in the Eurovision Song Contest into elegant, vibrant bouquets.

Pyramids
I adore demographic pyramids - in their usual form, they tell so many stories! And in the art form, even more so! The wonderful Jorge Camoes has updated his elegant demographic pyramids with forecasts! What beauty!
Complaints
A bit of history!
I couldn't find the source, but in reposts, a similar comment is often cited:
"Signatures under a collective complaint by Japanese peasants arranged in a circle so that it is impossible to determine the initiator. Edo period, 17th-18th century."
Do you think it's both beautiful and extremely practical?

Sunflowers!
Can you imagine a project about Van Gogh without sunflowers? Just look at this charm! I absolutely adore floral and botanical motifs in data art!
Check this beautiful project by Özgenur Korlu!

The Book of Circles
If you're feeling a bit melancholic this lovely evening, you can always watch how the wonderful Manuel Lima flips through his beautifully designed book on camera! Check it on YouTube!
My projects
The VizDice Workshop!
Another wonderful piece of news! I came up with and spontaneously hosted an interesting event where I drew inspiration from Dungeons & Dragons games, as well as visual elements for visualizations! I remember encountering a similar approach in one of the articles in the Nightingale journal, and it struck me as a fantastic idea!
So I decided to host a workshop where participants would create their own characters and embark on a data visualization adventure! Using beautiful multi-sided dice, they would receive assignments and practice visualizing data. I also taught them theory on visualization, focusing on preattentive attributes! It turned out to be very interesting, and I hope to host more events like this in the future!
Check out the fantastic projects that participants came up with! Some are still in the sketch stage, but I believe the work will grow even more soon!
For details about the workshop and what transpired, you can read more here!
Dungeons & Dragons!
Motivated by the recent VizDice event, I finally finished the website for my Dungeons&Dragons project - featuring badges for our gaming community.
I conducted a survey among the members of the D&D community with whom we're planning to play tabletop games online, asking about their gaming preferences! Based on the data collected, I created a data art project where each participant received their own badge featuring details about their gaming experience, favorite race, and class!
I have a particular fondness for community badges, as you may recall from the Flowers and Numbers - the badge project has become quite extensive there!
It turned out very heartfelt, and now I definitely want a t-shirt with it! 😁

That’s it for today! Thank you for reading! 🌸
